Humility and Self- Transformation – May I Be Frank?

“The first step in humility is to say ‘I don’t know’ and then ask for help.”

Wow. These words really resonated with me because they cut through my pride and perceived fear of being seen as “less than”. To ask for help is to be weak, right?

Wrong. To ask for help, to make yourself vulnerable, to clean out your mind, body, and soul, and open yourself to growth and the evolution of your being – that takes more strength than anything I can think of.

Enter “May I Be Frank?” a documentary about a 54-year old Sicilian (Frank Ferrante) living in SF who is obese, a drug addict, has Hep-C, and is estranged from the people that matter most to him in his life. He stumbles into Cafe Gratitude, a raw, vegan cafe, and is asked the question of the day:

“What is one thing you want to do before you die?”

Frank’s answer: “I want to fall in love one more time, but no one will love me looking the way I do.”

So begins a transformative 42-day journey in which three guys from the cafe are inspired to help Frank to clear his mind, body and soul – and Frank says “yes” to help.

What an amazing journey. Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of not only watching the film with some friends at Keplers, the local bookstore in Menlo Park, but also meeting Frank himself! He walzted into the room after the show, a wide smile on his face, charismatic energy radiating from him, and answered the audience’s questions straight from his heart.

And one of the things he said was “The first step in humility is to say ‘I don’t know’ and then ask for help.”

It takes a lot to say “please, help me”. It takes a lot to accept the help, to remain being open in the entire process. And to document it for the world to see.

I am inspired by Frank’s story. He showed up big time and we are all the better for it. I want to show up big time in my life, too – more than I am currently doing. I know I can ask for more help and I know I can change my life for the better because of it. I want the same for you – to really get the most out of your life.

What is one thing you can ask for help on that will transform your life?
